I looks like B&W, but it's actually not. This picture was taken a few years back when the high res setting on my Casio digital camera as 640x480. The color reproduction left a lot to be desired, as you can see. Even the original, when viewed much bigger than it's buzznet size is pretty pixelated. Digicams have come a long way since then, and its a GOOD thing!
The original photo had a big reflection of the window on the other side of the cathedral, which I had to photoshop out. You can see the repeating marble pattern in the upper left corner.
The scale of it is really amazing. It seems like every inch is covered in some kind of ornamentation. Beautiful carvings on every wall, each of which is giant in humam proportions, but looks perfectly normal against the huge building.
It's also quite different than Notre Dam, which is about 5-600 years older. Notre Dam itself is not nearly as ornate. The structure itself is awe inspiring - especially for a construction date around 1100.
I've not been here...but I have been to Notre Dame. St. Peter's was my mothers favorite. I keep hoping I'll finally write a best seller or something and get to do the Mediteranean some day.
